Casting couch, how to avoid being used by people in power, how to get ahead without sleeping in to the top?
1. Since the beginning of the entertainment industry it was a common practice for female talent to be subjected to casting couch practice that comes in two ways, some talent was abused and some talent actually enjoyed it. But the history of the entertainment industry and fashion industry roots inherits that appalling practice.
2. As the Me Too movement and feminists rise to power in American politics it’s significantly reduced the dominance of casting couch practices. We see more and more criminal cases in the press and it becomes more difficult to hide those behaviors away from the public view.
3. Many productions now are run by female principals and many productions have gay folks in charge so it shifts the focus not only of victims as girls but to boys. With power comes greed regardless of sexual orientation.
4. To avoid being a victim to powerful people there are a few pillars of confidence. Having money is one of them, basically a powerful play on the weak and poor. When you have a job or support of your family financially the money will play less of the persuasion, you will be more independent. Less vulnerable you will be.
5. Another way of reducing the influence of power and gate keepers is having an alternative route, like other options that minimize their control over you. There are so many brands, so many shows, so you can go to another agency, another film, another production; none of them control the market, if you understand that, it will reduce dependency.
6. Less idolization, there is a saying in the bible about not to create an idol, the less you worship the brand, celebrity, the person in power the less likely they will make you do something that you do not want.
7. Having real friends and a support system also minimize dependency on casting couch. Get a mentor like me who can guide you away from problems and open doors for you without asking for sex favors. There are many good people in the industry who are genuinely good people and will help without looking for favor in return. Some people do it to make money, but some people do it because they love art and fashion and want to leave a legacy and just do the right thing without expectations and preconditions.
